can you change out a 250w power supply with a 350w power supply or higher without doin some kinda software thing? does it depend on the motherboard? does it depend on anything?

Sin, there are 3 types of power connectors out there. Older boards/power supplies typically have a 20 pin power connector. Newer ones have a 24 pin connector. The industry saw the potential problem a bit late but have since changed the newest power supplies to have a 24 pin connector in which the last 4 pins are detatchable from the 20 pin, hence it works for either MB. Make sure when you look to upgrade you know what you have, and that the new one will support it. You can open your case
(entry deleted: see footnote on bottom) and count the pins if you don't have the manual- it's the long rectangular connector with all the pretty colors.
