Life exists outside of Warhammer!

Post by Sticks » Tue Mar 24, 2009 2:25 pm

This is my life this week...picture in article is 2 blocks from my home as the crow flies.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29859118/

Most people should be okay as long as levees and temporary dikes hold. If they broke, our house is only naturally protected to a 38 ft level and the potential is 41-42 foot level (about 24 ft over flood stage.) Bigger issue may be sewer system pressure and back-up there.

This happened in 1997 and completely flooded out a town north of us (Grand Forks, 50k people) and Fargo took minimal damage compared to them. They now have a permanent flood protection system and we've done nothing (Fargo is the largest town in ND at 90K, add in immediate, surrounding towns and colleges we're at ~180K.)

It really doesn't phase a person until you see the national guard and police escorts for tractor trailer loads of sand bags, and all the other stuff connected to it.

People actually have the nerve to call into radio shows complaining about road closures, traffic detours and these escorts. Wake up folks, the universe isn't centered around you!

Mourn (Redemption guild mate) is a RL friend of mine who is also impacted by this, haven't talked to him or seen him on recently so I'm thinking he may be worse off.

This won't stop me from playing in the evenings though!!! Only so much you can do to hold back mother nature.

One interesting note of trivia, the Red River flows north and from here it makes it's way into Manitoba and Lake Winnipeg.

Haven't felt too confident the past day or so, so I've been moving all our valuables from the bottom floor up and I continue to do this. My wife has been sandbagging in the community (easier for her with a big chain of folks) while I do the heavy lifting at home. She didn't get hom until 1am from doing this last night.

Mourn is busy pumping water from inside their communities levee system back out, and remains dry I think.

Today I personally feel a bit better, the main dike (sandbags) is 2-3 blocks away and the city began construction of a contingency, earthen dike between us and the main dike last night.

Many friends and co-workers of ours have lost their homes already and we've not reached the crest yet. In addition we've got more rain, a blizzard and freezing temps to deal with. So there are many, many people in worse shape than us as they've lost the fight.

I still managed to log in for 60mins last night to escape reality!! Probably will do so again today as long as the water is kept at bay.
